The new factory: The company does not wish to dwell on the fire which prompted their move to Lathallan but it occurred on 5th May 2009 in the factory in Broxburn. However 18 vans were still operating in the immediate aftermath. The Lathallan operation opened on 10th August 2009. Sales are now 90% of the level they were prior to the fire and the company is looking to the future. Although the company is based within Falkirk Council District their address is West Lothian and they offer a first class service to both Falkirk and Linlithgow, each being the first drop off point going East and West. Many of the staff were with the company in Broxburn but the company is now looking locally for new staff and this represents a tremendous opportunity for employment from Linlithgow. Prior to the fire the company employed some 330 people and they are now about 40 shy of this figure. They take a great pride in the local area and feel more a part of the community than they did on the former industrial estate in Broxburn. Fish from Campbells: Until now the fish operation has continued from the Broxburn base but a new fish factory and administrative centre is being built at Lathallan and this will be open for operations on 28th July 2010. The grand formal opening will be between 1-3 p.m. on 11th September, attended by, amongst others, Martin Wishart, Tom Kitchin, Nick Nairn and Jim Murphy, if he is still Scottish Secretary following the election on 6th May. Campbell's Chinese food: In addition to the new state of the art factory at Whitecross Campbells also owns three cash and carrys for Chinese restaurants, one in Edinburgh, one in Glasgow and one in Aberdeen, serving 50% of the Chinese restaurants in Scotland. The future: The company is now looking to the future and plans a new "Food Resort" including, for example, a smokehouse, bakery and fine foods market. This would be a retail outlet for the first time. They also plan a training facility on produce and craftsmanship for meat, fish, game and poultry. Students would study how to handle these products, including the ageing process, proteins, texture, seasonality and both wild and farmed salmon.
