Seasonal recipe - Wild garlic and potato soup
Wild garlic is now growing in great abundance - you can identify it by the mild garlic smell when you crush a leaf. If you can't find wild garlic, this soup is also delicious made with rocket instead - use the same quantities.
Serves 4
1 tablespoon oil 2 medium sized onions, peeled and roughly chopped 2 large potatoes, peeled and chopped 2 large handfuls wild garlic leaves (weighing about 80-90g) 350ml hot vegetable stock 50ml double cream (optional, but much better with the cream) Heat the oil in a large pan, add the onion and cook till soft. Add the potatoes and cook for a few minutes then add the stock, and simmer until the potato is soft. Add the wild garlic and cook for a minute more. Remove from the heat and puree in a blender or food processor. Stir in the cream and season to taste with salt and pepper.

"There is nothing in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and he who considers price only is that man's lawful prey". John Ruskin (1819 - 1900) If you're running a successful business and you're selling a product that plenty of people want to buy, chances are that one day sooner or later someone else will open a similar business nearby and some of your customers will go to them. It stands to reason, its only natural, and no business owner should be surprised when it happens. We all face competition from time to time.

Leek, goat’s cheese and walnut pasta
Our seasonal recipe from Hyndberry uses one of the last of the winter vegetables - leeks.
300g pasta shapes, eg penne 2 medium leeks, washed and trimmed 20g butter and 1 tbs olive oil 30ml white wine or stock
200g goats cheese, cut into 1cm chunks 125g walnuts, chopped and lightly toasted a handful lemon thyme leaves salt and pepper
Cook the pasta in boiling lightly salted water until just cooked. Drain and keep warm. Meanwhile, cut the leeks diagonally into slices 5mm thick. Heat the butter and oil in a large pan and when it’s hot add the leeks and cook quickly for a couple of minutes. Add the wine or stock and let it boil up. Add the goat’s cheese and combine briefly. Stir in the pasta, with the walnuts. Season with a little salt and plenty of black pepper. Turn into a serving dish and scatter over the thyme (Serves 4).

Farmhouse Breakfast is the Business
March 15 2010 16:55:16
Winter’s last riposte couldn’t defeat the intrepid Farmhouse Breakfast Corps, as Field Marshall Nan Hay rallied the troops to overcome all the odds. Some people say we don’t do much, but they can’t argue that what we do, we do in style. So, for the fourth year in a row, a winter Wednesday was brightened up by the peerless hospitality of Nan Hay, propietrix with the mostrix, at Belsyde House – where she, family, friends and staff all laboured admirably to host yet another fantastic Farmhouse Breakfast for members and guests.

Simon Walton (UWClub) considers the merits of a face to face and a spot of facebooking What are the merits of social networking? I don’t know about you, but I just don’t have time to sit next to my computer all day, checking my entries on Digg, Bebo, and a dozen RSS feeds. However, that’s not necessarily what my clients think, nor is it how my competitors behave. Like it or not, the web is an avenue to market that cannot be ignored.

I’ve signed up to Donaldson’s!
January 20 2010 15:54:00
Scotland’s national Grant Aided Special school for pupils aged 2.5 years to 19 years relocated to Linlithgow 2 years ago, and has very much been accepted into the vibrant local community, thus enhancing the lives of our children. Donaldson’s would very much like to give something back to the community, and we have come up with the idea of helping Linlithgow to become a ‘Deaf Aware’ town, to which deaf customers and service users could come, confident that they will receive the same warm welcome from staff in shops, businesses and tourist attractions as all others visitors receive.

Brian Taylor’s Big Debate – or should that be Big Brian Taylor’s Debate? Whatever the nomenclature, the BBC Scotland political correspondent brought his weekly radio show to West Lothian, hosted at West Lothian College in Livingston, last Friday (15 January). Joining the robust and rotund reckoner of political rhetoric was a panel of five leading speakers from Scottish contemporary life. SNP MSP Angela Constance and Labour MP Michael Connarty fulfilled the political connections; the chief executive of Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Ron Hewitt represented a business perspective; while Andy Walker, the vice principal of Heriot Watt University and Joy Hendry who published the literary magazine Chapmans took their seats for the gown and town voices.

LADAS needs you!
December 07 2009 12:46:35
The Linlithgow and District Allotment Society (LADAS) has been working hard for over a year to try to find land for allotments in the Linlithgow area and the campaign now needs a shot in the arm. The group was formed as a result of early meetings of Linlithgow Climate Challenge, and in 2008 LADAS had 122 members, became constituted and presented a written Proposal to West Lothian Council, officially requesting allotments in Linlithgow. There has never been a tradition of allotments in Linlithgow, and unfortunately there is very little suitable Council owned land available
