Earn More, Work Less! Every business has the potential to be great. Yours included. And yet the sad reality is that most businesses are not extraordinary.
Often they fail to realise their full potential and are a constant source of worry for their owners. If you want to build an extraordinary business chances are you need to do some things differently.
Not everyone wants to build a large business but most people who are running a small one would like to find ways to do things more efficiently and profitably—to free up their time and earn more money for their efforts.
This is what produces a more valuable asset (your business) and a better lifestyle for you and your family.
So, how do you do that? That's where we come in.

Young Enterprise is in Town
October 09 2009 14:41:05
Young Enterprise Scotland is a registered Charity in Scotland which delivers practical learning programmes designed to provide young people with a real-life experience of the world of business, employment and economics. Its mission is to "inspire and equip young people to learn and succeed through enterprise".
This year 13 6th Year pupils from Linlithgow Academy are taking part in a Young Enterprise programme. We are setting up and running our own real company called Mercury Enterprise. We have various innovative business ideas so watch the space! Currently we are raising funds to finance these ideas by selling shares, car-washing and selling raffle tickets. If any LBA members would like to sponsor our future ventures please get in touch either with me or our Link Teacher Mrs Sandhu.

LBA's Question time and Annual General Meeting
October 09 2009 11:36:55
LBA's annual Question Time event was a big success again this year. The formal business of the AGM was despatched in good time, confirming David Tait as Chair for another year, with Jim Hay remaining as Treasurer. Jon Newey was reinstalled as Vice Chair and Mike Vickers stepped into the role of Membership Secretary. Our Honorary Secretary for the past 18 months, Anne Daly, stepped down and the committee thanked her for all her hard work.
David Tait gave a rousing summary of the year's events and explained the committee's proposal for the LBA to become a company limited by guarantee; a proposal that was approved by all present. The prestigious post of Company Secretary remains available, so all readers are invited to volunteer! With the business of the AGM swiftly completed the Question Time event got under way! On the panel this year were Doreen Grove (Historic Scotland), Chris Norman (Chief planning Officer for West Lothian Council), Jack Shennan (Editor of the Journal & Gazette), and Jim Gardner (Federation of Small Businesses). Our QT chairman this year was Action Coach Alan McColm.

Thoughts on Linlithgow!
October 09 2009 11:34:55
|
What are we doing in Linlithgow? We have a beautiful town centre but no way to access it!
We have a long narrow town stretching nearly two miles from Linlithgow Bridge to the end of Springfield and no sensible facilities for the 15000 population to visit the centre of the town. Indeed, why have a centre if it cannot be used by cars. We love our cars and cars are here to stay. They will not use petrol in a few years time but they will still exist. The original model-T designed by Henry Ford, to take an example, used ethanol as its fuel.

Membership Update
October 09 2009 11:32:39
|
I am very pleased that our membership continues to grow. We are now 85 and our target is 100 by the year end. We have looked at who our members are; we want the LBA to represent the WHOLE business community but we have very few tradesmen and no farmers. So, Members, tell your builders, painters & decorators, tilers, joiners, glaziers and electricians what a great bunch we are and we need them in the LBA to make the Association even better.
And Members do please persuade your local farmer to come and join us. In this time of Climate Change LOCAL farmers are key.
Mike Vickers (Membership Coordinator)

Cross Views
September 13 2009 16:06:11
Well, the town seems to be buzzing despite the economic gloom elsewhere in the world. New shops have opened and seem to be thriving, work is underway to convert to old Post Office, planning permission has been granted for the redevelopment of the Vic Hall, and work on the Burgh Halls is moving along apace. But there are always more questions to answer.
Are shops closing on the High Street? What kind of businesses does Linlithgow really need? Is Linlithgow just a dormitory town (No!)? Can our wee town compete with Tesco and Sainsburys (Yes!)? What should happen to the Springfield triangle site? What about the Industrial estate?

Linlithgow Academy needs your help….
September 13 2009 15:58:55
…and maybe we can help you too! The Academy runs a programme of Work Experience for S4 and S6 students. In S4, all pupils go on work experience placement for a week, organized by the school. In S6, students are encouraged to organize their own vocational placements which can be on a more extended timescale. The programme is built on goodwill and the desire of local employers to develop the workforce of tomorrow. All placements are risk assessed prior to students taking them up.

Who Is lan Angus-Felton?
September 13 2009 15:54:35
Over the coming months, Ian Angus- Felton plans to knock on a lot of doors in Linlithgow. That's because he is the new local Stockbroker and Financial Adviser for the financial services company, Edward Jones, and he wants to get to know the residents and business community personally. During his door-to-door introductions, Ian hopes to learn more about the values and goals of the people who make up Linlithgow. "I know I am new here, but I am eager to become an active member of the community and someone whom people will recognise on the street." After his personal introductions, Ian will open a new Linlithgow branch of Edward Jones and continue the company's tradition of providing excellent customer service to local investors.
